Meraki began with the dream of Diamela Álvarez Restrepo, a Colombian woman in love with the ethnic and convinced that fusing this with contemporary fashion would generate innovative clothes and very chic. Passionate with this great idea, she decides with her friend Angélica Medrano, also Colombian but residing in Miami, to expand to North America this project of handbags and ethnic accessories intervened, and thus show the world through creativity, the mixture of details and the meaning of Every design, part of the culture of a country and its people.
WHO WE ARE
We are a Colombian company dedicated to the design, production, marketing and export of ethnic handbags and accessories, handmade, with traditional techniques and intervened with art.
OUR BRAND
The word MERAKI, comes from the modern Greek and means to do something with love and creativity, putting the soul in it. Meraki, is a venture of its own. It is one of the few words that has no translation or synonym in any other language.
Its meaning is the pillar that each piece is made with love, creativity and putting the soul in it will be something unique for the one who obtains it.
This name we chose because we feel identified with its meaning, because that is exactly what we want to do with each of the pieces that are intervened, since we are convinced that LOVE + CREATIVITY + PASSION will be our seal of guarantee to achieve different, unique products And really beautiful. This amalgam of feelings must be present in each of the people involved in the production of each of our products.
WHAT IS BEHIND MERAKI?
Long hours of work and dedication on the part of a group of artistic souls, as indigenous people, heads of families, artisans, painters and Moroccans.
In the case of Wayuu backpacks and bracelets, the process consists of the following:
Tissues
They are hand woven by the Wayúu Indians, in northern Colombia. Backpacks are the best expression of this ethnic group. They are made in crochet (a technique introduced by Catholic missionaries at the beginning of the 20th century) or crocheted. The preparation of each piece can take approximately 20 days. This craft technique has been learned from generation to generation by Colombian women.
Weaving in the life of the Wayúu indigenous community, which lives in the Guajira Peninsula, is much more than a cultural activity and inheritance of its ancestors. It means showing through your creativity, intelligence and wisdom life as you feel it.
These fabrics fascinate by their colors, designs and the complexity of techniques used in their elaboration. The typical motifs for this culture are representations of geometric figures that symbolize elements of nature (animals, plants, stars, traces, etc.) that surround their daily life. The more complex the figures are, the greater value they acquire.
The Backpack Wayúu, is also called Susu (that goes with you). The “Diary” Susu is a medium-sized backpack that usually charges them wherever they go. In it they store personal use items, work items, money or the fabric they are making. It measures between 20 and 30 cm wide by 35 cm high.
They are made in wool, in fine cotton and brightly colored yarns and in trolls in crude color. Occasionally, they have a small fringed nipple sewn to their base
Intervention
They were led by a group of heads of household and artisans, who used fine imported crystals, treated hides, paintings and other haute couture techniques.
Design
Designed under the passion of its creator for generating interesting fusions between ethnic and contemporary fashion.
They were the ones who, for about 20 days, united their souls in the same way for the art, to turn this piece of art into a piece of luxury and unique for you.
